Language Study

With careful planning, graduate students may study abroad for a semester or year. For semester or year-long programs, students receive either resident or transfer credit. Resident credit is granted for Minnesota Studies in International Development while transfer credit is granted for all others. Credit granted carries a foreign studies designation (FOST). If a student wishes to receive departmental credit, they can petition their home department to convert those credits upon their return.

For transfer credit, the Graduate School evaluates all official transcripts from foreign institutions. In order for credit to be evaluated, the student must have an official degree plan on file with the Graduate School. We advise students to meet with Andy Lucas in the Graduate School before leaving to receive preliminary approval for courses they plan to take abroad. Once all information has been received and verified, transfer credit is posted to the official U of M transcript. This process may take up to several months and we cannot guarantee that all classes will transfer.
