Students
The University of Minnesota (all campuses) offers mandatory international health insurance for education abroad opportunities provided through Cultural Insurance Services International (CISI). Most students on University of Minnesota sponsored and cosponsored programs are covered by this policy. The cost of this insurance is most often included in the program fee or arrangements can be made by the student to purchase the insurance individually at the Learning Abroad Center/Study Abroad Office on their respective campus. See the CISI international insurance FAQ for more information.
Students requiring CISI insurance and not participating in a program offered by a University of Minnesota office that includes CISI insurance can Apply Now.
For all students covered by the University's CISI policy, you will receive a detailed policy description defining all items covered and not covered along with an insurance card prior to your departure. For a few programs (generally, those which include country specific national insurance), you will receive the additional insurance information onsite.
For those students traveling abroad and not required to purchase CISI insurance, please click here for some questions to consider when purchasing your own coverage.
Faculty/Staff
All faculty and staff of the University of Minnesota are required to purchase CISI insurance if not covered by MedEx, through a University of Minnesota health insurance plan. Faculty and staff leading students abroad must be covered by the same insurance coverage as students and thus are required to receive CISI regardless of other coverage. To apply now and read eligibilty requirements, click here. See the CISI international insurance FAQ for more information.
For those faculty/staff traveling abroad and not required to purchase CISI insurance, please click here for some questions to consider when purchasing your own coverage.
